I have a large e-magazines collection (more than 30GB), almost entirely made of PDF files. I’m looking for a cataloging solution, that works in Windows and/or Linux, ideally shows magazines covers and have options for organizing by date, tags, etc.

I have tried Calibre, but it’s most orientated to books as it orders files by author. I also tried Mendeley, but it’s most orientated to (mainly scientific) articles, and it’s principally an online community of researchers.

The software that I want can be even a PHP based db. Any suggestion?

  1. Try Benubird PDF at http://www.debenu.com/index.php I think this might be what you want. Good Luck.

  2. Endnote can manage PDF files and sort on a number of criteria. FYI

  3. Use the firefox plugin (really a very powerful database program) called Zotero. It is designed exactly for this. I use it daily in my work as a scientist.

  4. Hi
Possible some sharewares will fit your requirements

    Digital Hoard
    http://www.digitalhoard.com/
The Demo version of Digital Hoard is a completely functional version and has all the functionality, but with the number of items in the library limited to twenty-five

    MediaMan
    http://www.imediaman.com/products/mediaman.html
There's a 30 day free trial available too although you may be able to track down the earlier version on the web which was free.

Much the same as mediaman with bonus of being able to import info from sites other than just amazon as well - useful if you also want to store the dewey number which amazon doesn't store. For mobility, you can download the database to your iPod.

  5. All I can think of: In Windows, I use PDF-XChange Viewer, which comes with an option for shell extension support during installation (make sure you tick the checkbox to preview PDF covers in Windows Explorer).

As far as organizing goes, you can use the sorting options in Windows Explorer and use the 'Extra Large Icons' view to see the PDF covers.

    • thank you Jessica! It's not exactly what I'm looking for, but it's a very good tip anyway, I'll use it!!

      • Hi Daniel,
I just found this open-source application called Shoka in case none of the suggestions satisfied you.

  6. Hmm, right now I can only think of creating an Portfolio with Acrobat Pro.
Unfortunaley, since all PDF's are stored within the Portfolio, it won't update automatically when you get a new e-mag - you would have to add it by hand.
It also works solely in Adobe Acrobat and Reader ~ e.g. Preview on OSX would give a link to download Adobe Reader.
