You can set the master system volume for your Windows laptop to be louder or softer. If you have hearing problems or just need to adjust volume for setting, making the change is simple.

  • While these volume changes exist to make the movie more immersive, they can be really annoying if you have sleeping kids, or neighbors that like to file noise complaints against you all the time.
  • Sep 18, 2014  My ears adjust to the volume like my eyes adjust to low-light; so a low volume seems louder as I get adjusted. I will be getting a volume dial to go between my headphones & phone, but I'd love if there were an app that allowed more fine-grained control of the volume.

I use Butler & USB Overdrive to setup key commands and map media keys (play/pause/skip back+fwd/volume/mute) to control iTunes & Spotify, as well as other system wide controls. Regular in-app key commands can be setup in the Mac OS System Prefs - Keyboard - Application Shortcuts. While these will give you more control via key commands when you're working in the app, they won't work if.

  1. From the Control Panel, click Hardware and Sound.

  2. Click the Adjust System Volume link under Sound to display the Volume Mixer dialog box.

  1. Make any of the following settings:

    • Move the Device slider to adjust the system’s speaker volume up and down.

    • For sounds played by Windows, such as a sound when you close an application (called system sounds), adjust the volume by moving the System Sounds slider.

    • To mute either the main or application volume, click the speaker icon beneath either slider so that a red circle with a slash through indicating “no” appears.

  2. Click the Close button twice.

Here’s a handy shortcut for quickly adjusting the volume of your default sound device. Click the Volume button (which looks like a little gray speaker) in the notification area on the right side of the taskbar. To adjust the volume, use the slider on the Volume pop-up that appears, or click the Mute Speakers button to turn off sounds temporarily.

Today, many laptop keyboards include volume controls and a mute button to control sounds from your computer. Some even include buttons to play, pause, and stop audio playback. Having these buttons and other controls at your fingertips can be worth a little extra in the price of your keyboard.

If you’re using your laptop in a public place such as an Internet café and want to listen to music as you work, consider carrying a set of lightweight headphones with you and attach them to your laptop using the round headphone port. You can play your music or audio book as loud as you like and not disturb those around you.

Many of us like to listen to music whether it’s in the car on the way to work, walking down the street or at home to relax. As we know, there is a multitude of different ways to get your music files onto your phone or MP3 player and there are also several different sources online from P2P networks, to download services like iTunes, searching for MP3s in Google, Myspace or Amazon etc, to scouring the web for royalty free downloadable music.

One of the problems you will have most likely come across if you have music from several different sources is that they don’t all have the exact same volume level. Some individual tracks or whole albums will have been encoded by a different person or company using different methods and might be significantly louder or quieter than others. It’s quite frustrating turning the volume level right up to listen to a quiet track, and then the next song has a much higher default volume level and gets played way too loud.

What you need to cure this problem is a program to alter the volume of the songs to a similar level so there are no sudden jumps between tracks when there shouldn’t be. There are a couple of different ways to change the volume of an MP3. One is to actually re-encode the file to the desired level, but this has a drawback of lowering the quality of the audio. The second way is better because it edits the MP3 file without touching the audio waveform itself and therefore quality is not affected.

MP3Gain is a good utility to use because it works in the lossless way and all the editing to the MP3 file in terms of its volume can be changed or completely undone again later on. The program doesn’t work on the principle of adjusting the audio level to the peak volume in the track which can still provide MP3’s with different volumes. Instead it uses an algorithm called ReplayGain to calculate the tracks overall loudness and then adjusts the song to the required level, making the sound you actually hear more consistent across several songs.

MP3Gain is completely free to use and is open source software. There are also installer and portable versions available, and if you’re not sure whether you have the required Visual Basic runtime files installed, download the “Full” version installer executable or zip file because they are included with that version.

To load MP3 files into the program you can simply select individual files or playlists using the Add Files button. Or alternatively use the Add Folder button to load in whole albums or complete folders full of your favorite music, the program will recurse into sub folders by default. MP3Gain has 2 separate modes to calculate and adjust song volume, Track Mode and Album Mode and they work in different ways.

Track mode – This is best used for collections of individual tracks which are completely separate from each other such as compilations or greatest hits releases. The volume level for each song is calculated and the amount of gain needed for it to match the target volume (default of 89db) is displayed. For example, some songs may need a drop in volume to reach the target level, some will need a small increase and some may need a big increase. So the volume level across all songs selected will meet the target value.

Looking at the below image you can see the leftmost Track Volume column is different for each song, and the recommended Track Gain will increase or decrease the level by that amount for each song to reach the target of 89db. Very quiet songs will have a big increase, those that are already close to the target may need little or no change at all.

Album mode – This mode is suited to whole albums or relate collections of songs. What it does is calculate the average volume level across all the selected tracks and then works out how much gain needs applying to reach the target level (default 89db). So if it says an increase of 3db to reach the target is needed, all tracks will be altered by this amount only, even the very quiet songs. This has the advantage that quieter parts of an album will stay that way relative to the louder parts, but the overall volume of the album will be increased.

Look at the same image again and you can see that although there are a couple of relatively quiet tracks, MP3Gain has worked out the average volume level across the album of songs is actually very close to the target and only needs a minor increase. The quiet tracks will still be quiet relative to the other songs in the album.

Although MP3Gain might sound quite difficult to use, it’s actually very easy. Once the files are loaded, simply press the Track/Album Analysis button and the volume levels will be calculated. If changes need to be made, simply choose to apply the Track, Album or Constant type of gain to the files. Constant is a simple method to increase/decrease the db level by a set amount across all files. If you want to put the levels back to default, simply use the Modify Gain -> Undo Gain Changes menu option.

MP3Gain has been tested on and works fine in windows XP to Windows 7 64-bit.

Why are you talking about MP4Gain? This article is about the open-source software MP3Gain…

Reply

This soft is useless for me because it can’t decrease volume below 75db.

Reply
HAL9000 Admin7 months ago

The developer probably never thought people would want to go to such low db levels, which is why the user interface doesn’t allow it.

However, I believe the command line tool can go below that if you read up on how to use it.

Although a lot of software and devices support ReplayGain (which is what MP3Gain is setting in the mp3 headers) it is by no means ubiquitous. You will still find instances where the playback will not have adjusted audio.

Could I use this for nature sounds, I’ve got some on my mp3 player, but when I plug it into my pillow speaker the sounds are not really loud enough for me to hear?

They can be used for any MP3. If you are not happy with the results, just undo them.

I have a USB with several mp3. These are on several folders. Do I just run the entire USB drive.

You can do that if you want. If you have thousands of MP3s it might be better to split them into chunks instead of trying to do all at once.

I still have a problem with songs being louder than others even after using this. I use track gain to 98 or 99 and applied it and yet there is still a big difference in sound from track to track. I think the problem is that if a song is like 97 or around that, the program decides to leave it alone. Therefore not totally fixing the volume issue.

MP3Gain doesn’t work with Windows 10

Reply
HAL9000 Admin1 year ago

It does work with Windows 10 fine but you are likely getting the MSCOMCTL.OCX error?

If so, that is because some old Visual Basic files need to be installed on the system. Simply download and install the MP3Gain full installer. The VB files will be registered and the program will work.

You can uninstall it and use the portable version afterward because the VB files stay registered.

Very good app, like it so much. But it only works on English file name. File name with other language/signs won’t load.

It’s not true. The app works perfectly with Cyrillic symbols. Try version 1.3.4 with Unicode support.

there is a build in option for this in windows 7.
It is called loudness equalization.

there is an app on android Mp3Gain :D

Use Sound Check in iTunes to make song volume consistent. ;)

So you might as well do what the article said and use MP3Gain, the loudness will then be the same across all devices…

What sort of errors or issues do you have? I have been using this software on Windows 7 64-bit for years…

Mp3gain works very well and is easy to use.
It’s a very small program that fixes an age old problem
It doesn’t need to be installed if you download the zip file
Just tell it where you want the log file saved and do the album batch
You can adjust the target volume if needed
I am very happy with the results and it’s FREE

Why do is it ‘recurse into sub folders by default’? I just want all my files in one folder and I certainly don’t want a computer program telling what it thinks is best for me!

Great tool. However if you’re looking for what radio stations have, that’s call compression, expansion and limiting. These are hardware rack units that go in stages of the audio line.

There are software units that do the same but the best performance will be with pro audio rack units. And yes…the public knows- you just need to know where to go. (Sam Ash, Guitar Centers etc). It might be helpful if you do a little more research before you start blasting people or programs you know little about.

Cheers.

Great tool mp3gain.

There is also mp3directcut, not an automated tool for many mp3s, but with this you can edit the mp3 like in a wav editor, without altering the quality.

So you can normalize the mp3 (like mp3gain in track mode) adjust volume in a section of the mp3, introduce effects of volume fading, split the mp3…
